For over three years, we have worked tirelessly to save and improve the LACC Swap Meet, a multi-generational market that provides opportunities for over 500 vendors, supports 17,000 students through the LACC Foundation, and serves the local community.
But now, the Swap Meet is under attack.
The Problem: Illegal Street Vending and City Inaction
Despite State Ordinances prohibiting vending within 500 feet of a swap meet, illegal street vendors have taken over the streets surrounding the LACC Swap Meet (Monroe, Marathon, and Madison), creating a dangerous, unregulated marketplace that threatens the safety, fairness, and future of this historic community event.
Instead of enforcing the law, Councilmember Hugo Soto-Martinez has actively blocked efforts to regulate the area, allowing illegal vending to continue unchecked. He has also spread false accusations against us and refused to meet publicly to address the growing concerns of vendors, students, and residents.
🚨 Due to this negligence, here’s what’s happening:
✔ Crime and vandalism are rising in the area.
✔ LACC Swap Meet vendor sales are down 40-60%.
✔ Revenue for the LACC Foundation is down 40%, threatening critical funding for 17,000 students.
✔ Illegal vendors pay no rent, insurance, taxes, or permits, leaving legal vendors struggling to compete.
✔ The future of the LACC Swap Meet is at risk, affecting vendors, students, and the entire community.
What We’re Fighting For
We are NOT anti-street vendor. We support everyone’s right to make a living, but it must be done legally and ethically.
We are demanding that:
✅ The City of Los Angeles and the LAPD enforce the 500-foot ordinance and remove illegal vendors from Monroe, Marathon, and Madison.
✅ Councilmember Hugo Soto-Martinez stop blocking enforcement efforts and meet publicly to address the concerns of vendors and the community.
✅ The Department of Transportation approve our requests for temporary No Parking permits to create safe loading zones for vendors and customers.
✅ The City take action to restore order, safety, and fairness to the LACC Swap Meet.
💪 Our community deserves better. Vendors deserve better. The students of LACC deserve better. If we don’t act now, we risk losing this historic market forever.
